John Stezaker Tribute
In the summer of 2011 the Tel-Aviv museum of art had an exhibition by artist John Stezaker. A very big room with a lot of small to medium sized works - Collages. that was my first time encountering the works of Stezaker and out of all places, in a beautiful room inside a museum! I was so curious, there I was making a lot of collages at home, exploring the medium on my own, alone. and then come this guy who apparently has been making them for A very long time. I was so amazed I ended up visiting the exhibition 2 or 3 times, and it super influenced my life and work.
A couple of months later, I was hitchhiking to the desert in Israel and found myself in the backseat cramped up with another hitchhiker, we started to talk, I told him I do collages and then told me in a very confused voice that he remembers visiting the Tel-Aviv museum, entering a room full of these cut up images of people and landscapes, and he immediately left the room. He said the images were so confusing for him, and that he could not "understand". he said he could not understand why the images are there, what's inside of them and/or who made them?
At that moment I understood a very strong part about collage and the art of collage making. A collage is a dream-world, collage represents that part that you cannot understand, something that cannot be grasped. it is beautiful, attractive and special but you cannot comprehend it, yet you are attracted to it. collage is like looking at a dream.
